With the information that you have provided, we don't know........

    1) Whether you have a new Time Capsule and new AirPort Express that have not ever been used before......or......whether you have used these products with another modem/router.

    2) What device that you will be using to configure the Time Capsule and AirPort Express.....and, if it is a Mac....what operating system that it might be using.

    3) What exactly you want the Time Capsule and AirPort Express to do on your network.....whether you want the Time Capsule to provide another wireless network, or whether it will be used as a wired hard drive, etc......and how the AirPort Express will be used on the network.

    Hi Bob Timmons,

August 2015, I too have this question.  Comcast recommended that I use their Cisco Dual-Band 802.11ac. I've been using a Time Capsule 802.11n WiFi Hard Drive, Model A1409. I used the Time Capsule to back up my files and to navigate between my Retina Display MacBook and my 27 inch iMac. I can't find anything to help me complete this task of connecting this configuration. I've seen comments from users where Comcast techs connect these for them, but only to find after the tech leaves, the Time Capsule no longer completes the tasks it did before the tech made changes.  My question - if I use the Cisco Dual-Band 802.11ac, can I hook it up and still have my TC operate and carry out its former tasks. If the TC 802.11n is directly connected directed to the Cisco 802.11ac, will the connection defer to the lower WiFi connection, making the Cisco 802.11ac, kind of useless?  Are there step by step instructions to configure and explain these options, because I believe, I am not the only one asking this question.  Also, on my TC Box, it states, Compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n-enabled computers, networks, and Wi-Fi devices.  (Mac OS X 7.5,  Mac OS X 8.5.)   Secondary usage - I stream video & live Feed, via  on an old Windows laptop—I don't want to even own a TV.  Thanks!!  I hope I provided enough information. If there is no clear answer, I'd like to know that as well, so I can stop my endless searching.  If this is a question that should be asked in another form, like why are you even considering the Cisco, please feel free to indicate that as well.

You can use your Time Capsule (TC) in conjunction with your new Cisco gateway device and still use it as before for Time Machine and with your network Macs.

I would recommend that you configure both the gateway and the TC for a roaming type network. In this type of network, each wireless router will broadcast its own Wi-Fi network, but use the same network name so that wireless clients "see" the new extended network as one wireless network AND can portable clients can roam between the routers.

The main requirements for this type of network are:

    • Each router MUST be interconnected by Ethernet; wireless connections between them will not work.
    • Each router MUST broadcast a Wi-Fi network using the same network name (aka SSID) and use the same wireless security type (WPA or WPA2) & password.
    • Each extending router must be reconfigured as a bridge. That is, its NAT & DHCP services must be disabled.
