Hi Ricardo, and a Warm Welcome to the Power Mac G5 Forum!

Not personally familiar with the application - is it the hard drive accessing? If it doesn't keep the buffer in RAM, or you don't have enough RAM, and sooner or later anyway, it will go to Virtual Memory(disc).

Presuming that the noise is not in the audio (...?) - If you run with the aluminium side panel off, can you hear where the noise is coming from? HD(s) are at top back or top right as you look at it from the side. Power Supply (PSU) fills the lower section underneath the horizontal metal plate.

Please post again with any more details and if you can locate the source of the noise.

the noise is coming from the tower...its not audio....it only happens when i'm shuttling through a timeline in after Effects...and its happened while shuttling through a Quicktime movie...i have the G5 dual 2ghz processors when they first hit...and the newest OS...i'm at work right now so i can't tell you the exact version...sorry.....the noise is similiar to data being written but tons louder and more sinister....like fingers or spider legs tapping to get out....hahah seriously...

Ricardo Cozzolino-

Seeing as how all noise is obviously relative to something, it is what it is. Is it in a very high frequency then? Somethin perhaps that some cannot hear?

I think I have the same sort of noise. However, I have a dual monitor set-up and it mainly happens when my background changes on my screens or I drag a window from one screen to the other.

Which arachnids, er, graphic card do you have? What monitor? You can update your list of stufff under "My Public Profile" located in the right hand column.

Luck-

I believe this is the infamous chirping power supply issue. Please read the following KB article in its entirety and see if it describes what you're hearing. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86523

My parents have a dual 1.8 GHz G5, and it will emit these noises when using the mouse wheel to scroll in Safari and if I recall correctly, it's done the same the few times I've used After Effects on it. However, it's not related to AE specifically; it's just that certain tasks in AE (such as scrubbing the timeline) make it noticeable.

If your machine doesn't fall within the serial number range that's eligible for power supply replacement, you can download Apple's CHUD tools, which will install a Processor preference pane in System Preferences. That preference pane has a checkbox to disable nap, which should alleviate the problem somewhat. You have to redo this checkbox every time the computer is restarted, though.

I believe the current version of the CHUD tools requires OS X 10.4, but there should be older versions that will support OS X 10.3. You'll just have to dig around in ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/ToolChest/Testing_-_Debugging/Performancetools/ to find a version that works.
