password reset on macbook

My wife has a macbook - she has forgotten her password and all the prompts have not helped remembered.

Obviously we can not download programs, etc as we do not know the password.

What are the options available to have the password reset?

I was thinking of buying a HDD transferring all her data and resetting the macbook - but she tells me there is some recovery disc you can buy??

Any ideas, suggestions?
