Q: Why is the left half of my display darker than the right? iMac 27 inch mid 2011 model.

I notice a darker shadow that fills most of the left half of my screen. Does this mean my screen is gonna bite the dust soon???

iOS 7.1.1

Your LED display is going bad. It has bitten the dust, and it will be expensive to fix. The display is around $800.

Well, you can take your chances on buying a Chinese or Korean knockoff display for around $350 plus shipping. You'll need to spend around $10.00 on tools. Then you'll need to figure out how to make a major disassembly in order to remove the old display and install the new one. Then hope it works. Meanwhile, having done all this you will no longer get any support from Apple, so if you screw it up you can't take to Apple to fix it for you.

Or you could buy an external display with the same specs using the same LG panel for under $500 and use it as an external monitor until you toss the old machine. It's not an easy road. Take from one whose been there already.

There is a known defect in the soldering on some iMacs. The display itself is not going as such.

Is it something that can be disassembled and fixed?
