Multiple AddressBook-v22.abcddb-files. Why?

I let Disk Warrior search my computer and the report said that I have over 100.000 files in top of Application Support/Address Book. In fact there are 176,000(!) - all with unique filename after the "AddressBook-v22.abcddb" and with "unknown" at the end of filename. They all contain "0 bytes". Does anyone know why? I am trying to throw them away but it takes a HUGE amount of time to move them to the trash. The computer doesnt seem to work hard at all and I have plenty of free memory. Somebody have an idea of how I can speed it up?

Thank´s again for all your effort and help! I think the problem are solved now - but it was pretty complicated. First I did all you describe above (and theres was a little difficulty when I ran step 5. All went well to the last moment. When I clicked "reset" the button turned grey and I could see the word "Clear" - but the button never got "sharp" again so I didn´t now when the process was finished. I let it get on for itself for a couple of hours and nothing changed. There was no visible process to see. So I got tired of it and restarted the computer. Maybe it wasn´t finished...?)

Anyway - when I checked after restart the system still produced all this nonsensfiles. ******! But when I ran the commands you wrote in your first reply I saw that Terminal tried to access the two folders "Images" and "Source" without success. Terminal reported "No permission"! That was strange because I just had reset all permissions (so maybe the process wasn´t finished at all...) so I looked at "Info" on the folder AddressBook and forced it to accept permissions for myself and included all objects inside - and that seems to have finally solved the issue. Now my AddressBook-folder looks normal and no extra files are produced.

Okay, from the results of this command, it looks as though at some point in the past two different accounts have been unsuccessfully merged and the permissions have also got mangled. I'm not aware of any 'easy' way to fix this, so I suggest that you wait a few hours before doing the following to give The Community time to comment or suggest an easier way.

1. Make sure your backup(s) are up to date.

2. In System Preferences ... > Internet Accounts, work down all your accounts and deselect 'Contacts' in every case. (This will leave your contacts on the server(s) but will stop them displaying in Contacts.app)

3. If you have any contacts still listed in Contacts.app, these are locally stored and at risk so follow these instructions from Apple, which will export them into a file you can later use to re-import them again:

Contacts (Yosemite): Export contacts

4. Copy-and-paste this command into Terminal.app and execute it:

sudo chown -R willybrinks ~willybrinks/Library/Application\ Support/AddressBook/

(It will only work when logged into an account with admin privileges.)

5. Logout and follow the instructions for resetting your home directory permissions given here, starting at the word 'Yuck!':

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/os-x-repair-home-folder-permissions

6. Restart, login and clear away the 'junk files' as discussed above. Verify that you can use Contacts to create and delete an address card and that the issues have been fixed.

7. If the contacts you exported in step 3 have vanished, re-import them.

8. Reverse the process you used in step 2 so that your contacts start syncing again.

9. Let us know whether this worked.

C.

P.S. Step 4 may be redundant; I am not sure whether the resetpassword method fixes ownership as well as permissions and ACLs.

Make sure your backups are up to date. Copy and paste these three lines into Terminal.app:

mkdir ~/Desktop/AddressBookJunk/

cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/AddressBook/

find . -type f -name 'AddressBook-v22.abcddb-*' -size 0 -exec /bin/mv {} ~/Desktop/AddressBookJunk \;

These will create a folder called 'AddressBookJunk' on your desktop and then move all the zero length files starting with 'AddressBook-v22.abcddb-' into it. You can then drag this folder to the Trash in one go.

This will not fix whatever issue is creating these files in the first place. You should use Console.app to inspect the log files to see what error messages appear around the same time one of these files is created.

C.

Thanks again. Now it worked, but my system keeps producing those mystery files. I´ve copied some text from my log which is mostly mumbo-jumbo to me. Maybe someone can see something in this and what I shall do?
