iPhone 5s not making or receiving calls and messages

FOr the last three days, I e notice my phone is not receiving or sending messages or phone calls. I've corrected it each day by doing resets. The first day I reset the network settings. Yesterday and today I did a hard reset of the phone with the sleep and home button. Is this an iOS 8.4 issue? is it an iPhone 5s issue? It's strang because the phone gets hot when charging, but after resetting, it cools down. Has anyone else seen this?

If you are unable to send or receive phone calls on your iPhone, as well as being unable to send or receive messages, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article - If you can't make or receive calls on your iPhone.

Thanks for the reply. I've gone through these steps. I'm not sure how to validate if the carrier settings are up to date. I don't get promoted for an update. As for the SIM card, I haven't pulled it out. I'm not crazy about the idea. None of those issues would seem to explain the overheating. Plus, both resetting the network and a hard reset have solved the issue. The problem is each day the problem repeats. This morning was the fifth day in a row. It's really strange.
