How do i format a new drive for iMac?

I have bought a separate drive (a separate hard disc) to my iMac. Its an old iMac from 2008 (OS 10 10.3 Yosemite)

The new drive shows up on my desktop when I plug it in as WD Elements

I need to format it to be able to put a lot of things (mainly photos from my iPhoto library) to this new drive.

How do I do to format it? I´ve tried to figure it out nyself but havent succeeded..

Choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu, double-click the Disk Utility, select the entire drive, open the Erase tab, and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
