cursor moves, but won't select or click

This is an occasional problem. I have early 2011 Macbook Pro (8,1) with Yosemite. I have seen suggestions to close the lid for a short time to "reset.". Sometimes this works, other times areas of the screen are black and slowly return to color. but often I must restart. I have tried an external mouse, but no luck. And there are no bluetooth devices nearby.

Hello oconnor4d,

If I understand correctly you are occasionally unable to select text or have anything click on screen with your mouse pointer but it is otherwise moving around as normal. There are 3 things I would do for this issue, and test after each.

First reset the PRAM on your computer:

OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM

If the issue persists, then next boot to Safe Mode which will flush some caches and verify the startup disk and test the issue again:

OS X Yosemite: Start up in safe mode

And lastly you can reset the SMC on your computer which might help if this keeps happening:

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
