This all depends on what you mean by "best".


In terms of reliability and performance, use a USB hard drive or a FireWire hard drive.......either of which must be connected directly to your iMac with a wired connection.


In terms of convenience, an Apple Time Capsule might be worth consideration, since the iMac will be able to back up to the Time Capsule using either a wired Ethernet connection, or using wireless.
