Q: Flickering Display

My iMac (mid 2010) appears to be operating correctly but the display background has started flickering - pink and orange small square boxes in bands and rectangular patches on the screen when I move my mouse - this affects the background only - not programme windows. It's only started to happen in the past week. Any ideas?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 20 Gb memory
