Can't Save as PDF - Error while printing

I can no longer print web pages to PDF using the File-Print-PDF-Save as PDF option.
When attempting this operation I get the Print dialogue box: "Preparing ..." followed immediately by "Error while printing".
I've tried a suggestion from one forum - deleting the Safari and Adobe preference files but that did not work. I can do File-Print-PDF-Save as PDF from Word but not from TextEdit. I don't know when this started but I did install Firefox recently.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Apple Discussions

Are you seeing this problem outside of Safari. For example, if you create a text file, then go to Print it, do you get the error if you select the PDF option?

Beyond that question, you may find it easier to use PDF Browser plug-in, which is freeware for personal use. When the PDF appears in Safari, this plug-in has its own toolbar above the PDF which is used for File Saving, Printing etc. If you use the Plug-in, make sure the Adobe Reader plug-in is removed from the Internet Plug-ins folder.

PDF save problems originating from the Print Dialogue box are usually indicative of a core OS problem.

Before going there, download a copy of OnyX. There is no charge for the software.

Once installed, double click on the OnyX icon in your application folder (or drag an icon to your dock for quick access) to open the application. After entering your administrator password, select "automation". The panel looks like this:

User uploaded file

Select the same items I have checked. In addition, select in the Clear Cache section "system" and "kernel". Then select "execute". The program takes about 5 to 10 minutes to run. Leave your computer alone, that is don't use it for anything else until OnyX is finished. Once complete, restart the computer. Because new cache files are being created, the start-up will take a little longer.

Usually, the "Clear Cache" options are not selected, however, your problem may be cache related.

Post back.

Sorry to say but It sure seems like you are going to have to reinstall the OS, preferably using the archive and install option. If you haven't done this before here are my two suggestions:

Take the machine to an Apple store, if you live near the Cincinnati or Columbus locations. There, at the Genius Bar, someone will help you with the reinstall, and perhaps shed a different light on the problem.

Install the OS on your own - best bet is to purchase the inexpensive E-zine from Take Control - Take Control of Upgrading to Tiger. Very helpful guide for a smooth upgrade or reinstall.
