Why is my iPhone vibrating randomly every few minutes

A couple of days ago my iPhone started vibrating every few minutes for no reason at all. It's the same kind of vibration that happens when you get an alert, but there's no alert on my screen. There's no indication why the phone is vibrating, and no indication what is causing it (i.e. whether it is an app or iOS or what).

Thinking it might have been caused by a bad app update, I checked what apps have been updated recently, and disable alerts and running in the background for all those app. It still happens.

It happens after random amounts of time. Sometimes it won't happen for a half hour. Sometimes it will happen and then happen again five minutes later.

This is an iPhone 6 running iOS 8.4.

Thanks in advance for any help.

What’s interesting is that my email is set to fetch manually. So if my phone is vibrating because I have new mail, then is checking for email when I’ve specfically set it not to. Plus when it vibrates, the email icon doesn’t indicate I have new mail. I also believe this is a recent behavior. I have changed this setting, so we’ll see if this works. But whether it vidrates or not it would seem it’s not honoring the fetch manually setting which impacts battery and cell usage.
