Q: son's phone getting my texts

My son is using my old 5. He uses it to play games and apps but now he can text over wifi.

He is on my Apple ID so that I can "monitor" his texts. However, he is now seeing my texts!

In settings>send&receive, both my phone number and my Apple ID/email are checked.

How can I have it so that I can see his texts and he cannot see mine?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8.4

You can't. Devices that share an Apple ID will also share texts. It's a feature added in 8.3 called "Continuity."

ITs by design appleid was made to be one for each user, using the same apple id will also make it impossible for you to facetime and he will get your call history too

Because he is not using it for messaging. You should really look into family sharing: Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

When I try to add my son to family sharing, it says "cannot create Apple ID"/unable to connect to server.

Yes I am on wifi and connected
