I currently own a MBP Mid 2010, operating on OS X Yosemite. I currently have 112.06GB free of 249.2GB, would it be possible to back up everything on my MBP to icloud storage? I'm interested in the 1TB icloud storage, for $20 a month. My family and I have various apple products so ultimately everyones iphones and ipads would also end up backed up. Is this possible and most important, is it safe?

Macs, however, cannot be backed up to iCloud to the best of my knowledge.
As sberman says, you can't back up a Mac to iCloud. You could use iCloud Drive and store all your documents there, though I consider it a poor substitute for DropBox. iCloud Drive has various limitations and functional oddities.
In short, if you're looking for a Cloud-based backup for your Mac, then iCloud isn't it. DropBox is hard to beat: some of the other cloud storage services have limitations (e.g. some characters not supported in filenames; extended attributes not copied). There are cloud backup services like Carbonite and BackBlaze, which might be more what you're after.
However: you need to have a good local backup too. Relying ONLY on a cloud storage service is not without risk.
Personally, I would not backup "everything" to any cloud service
unless you want to make your entire life available to the world.
As safe as all the services claim to be, more and more are getting
hacked all the time.
I would only put those items of non-critical nature and those that you want to share
between devices into any cloud storage.
I also agree with benwiggy that you really must have local backups. Things can go wrong
at anytime and if there is no internet access at the time, you're hosed.
Many people recommend having an off site backup of the computers in case of fire, theft, and so for. Below is a site where we could back up for 2 years for $190.
