Memory for Late 2009 21.5-inch iMac

I only have 4GB (2x2GB) in my iMac now and it is starting to run slowly, and I know I can install up to 16GB (4x4GB). I went on the Apple website and got "No memory currently available for that model." when looking to buy more RAM. Is it safe to go on amazon and buy other memory? Is there any way I can still purchase it from Apple?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Buy it from a source such as OWC or Crucial.
