Is there anything new/recommended to replace iWeb?

OK, it's time to give up. I'm losing bits on iWeb, can't publish stuff anymore. Time to reconstruct the site, I guess. I have a blog with WordPress, but I get confused about how that would fit into a website constructed with their stuff. I see folks recommending Adobe Muse. I have not idea what happened with Everweb or Flux or whatever.

Any current recommendations before I slit my wrists in frustration?

If you already have a blog with Wordpress, then it would seem sensible to just add your whole site. I don't see what is that confusing about it? If you use WordPress, you will see that you can add either posts or pages to the site and that is what you do if you want a site - add the pages of your site.

I don't know whether the blog posts are on the front page of the site? If so and you don't want that for your website, you can just create a static front page instead - just create a new page for your blog and then all your posts will be re-directed to that blog page instead of the front page. You can then include that Blog page anywhere on your menu as part of your whole site.

Don't know whether you use Wordpress.com or .org, but if you want more control over WordPress, then I would suggest that you use WordPress.org and you can load that directly onto your server/host with one click installation, depending on what web host you use?

I would not recommend Adobe Muse - it is subscription based and you will need to pay every month. You CANNOT just buy it once and then use it, so by the time you have pad the subscription every month, you could have purchased it several times over.

Nothing has happened to EverWeb and Flux. They are still very much around and are being used and developed actively - Flux V is now the current version. Take a look at Flux at the Escapers site, but you need to know some html and css to be able to get the most out of this.

EverWeb is still going strong - take a look here EverWeb

Don't know whether EverWeb have added their blog yet, but they were developing it, but you can add a blog to an EverWeb site too and if you want to you could either add your WordPress blog as a link from that site or embed it into EverWeb itself using iFrame as you did with iWeb.

It is easy enough to set up your site with WordPress though.

I've been waiting for a replacement for about three years, and still nothing. I had two websites, both were developed on iWeb. Now all that is left is the copyright page that shows up when you try to visit the sites. I hoped that they were discontinuing iWeb because its software was incompatible with the big update that got rid of the applovation, and that later they would bring it back. Now I've given up on it.

I'm baffled about how to proceed with developing a WordPress site proper, because we already have a website developed in iWeb hosted by GoDaddy (www.topdrawers.org) which allows us to have a free blog using WordPress (blog.topdrawers.org). I don't know if I just launch out doing a Page with WordPress, and don't know how that would appear in relation to the blog (or the original website, which I need to delete eventually). I don't know if I need to go to WordPress and BUY a template or something (and then would they be the hosts and change the whole web address - ack!).

Geez, it used to be so simple with iWeb. I was happy to give up doing stuff with DreamWeaver, and I sure don't want to go back to that! Although... maybe I could actually figure out CSS if I did.

Ack.

iWeb was discontinued at least 3 years ago now and is no longer sold or supported by Apple.

The fact that iWeb was discontinued has nothing at all to do with updates, it was due to the discontinuation of firstly .Mac and then MobileMe. iWeb was developed in the first place because Apple brought out their own hosting platform in the shape of .Mac and then MobileMe and needed a web development tool.

With the advent of cloud storage and computing Apple decided to close the MobileMe servers and because of this, they no longer needed iWeb, so it was ditched when they brought in iCloud to replace MobileMe, with no hosting.

Remember that Apple is not a software company and there are other software companies out there that specialise in this and are therefore better at creating web creation software.

Apple are not likely to bring back iWeb ever and there most definitely is a replacement out there called EverWeb developed by Rage Software that is the closest application to iWeb that you are ever going to find and because it is so like iWeb was, there will be no steep learning curve. If you do get stuck, then there are very good support forums.

You need to move on from iWeb - it has gone and won't be coming back any time soon, so look for the alternatives out there of which there are many.

If you don't like the iWeb alternatives, then take a look at the Content Management Systems (CMS's) - they can be installed directly on your server and no need for files on your computer and if you want password protected pages, you can do that - the CMS's are Drupal, Joomla and Wordpress, so take a look.

Okay. As you have your website hosted on Godaddy what you have is your iWeb website loaded onto your main site - so root level. Your WordPress blog is actually a sub-domain of your main website.

You don't need to do anything specific and you can just start to build your website on the existing Wordpress blog that you already have. Just make a static front page if you wish and set up a new page for your blog posts and then add the same pages to your site that you had on your iWeb site.

You don't need to purchase any themes for Wordpress - simply click on the Appearance section of the site and then go to themes and there are lots of free themes that you can install.

Eventually, you will need to delete the old iWeb site and you will then need to move the Wordpress site to the route level of your hosting account.

When the time comes, you can contact GoDaddy and get help with this, but it should simply be a matter of deleting the sub-domain and moving the WordPress site to the top level of your hosting.

I am sure GoDaddy can do that for you when the time comes.

Other than that, just start constructing your site on the WordPress installation that you have now and experiment with the different free templates that are freely available to download.

You don't need to use any html or CSS either.

"Just make a static page" - what the heck is that, and how would I do it?

It sounds like the least hysterical thing I could do is make a WordPress page, and talk to GoDaddy about moving it to the top level of the hosting when I'm ready to delete the existing website. Ack.

Thank you for your careful consideration & trying to help me out of my dilemma.

I use Drupal all the time and love it. All my work websites that were in iWeb are now Drupal.

Drupal has come a long way in 10 years and I must admit that I once tried to use Drupal 6 and gave up on it because it was too complex. I thought I would revisit and that was just after they brought out Drupal 7 and that is a lot more user friendly and very easy to use. Take a look at Drupal 7, but now Drupal 8 is in beta and that has been improved too - creditor included.

As well as my own sites I have also set up Drupal sites for a couple of people who wanted membership sites and that is easy to do in drupal.

If I were you, I would go back and take a look at it again. It is now easy to use.

Okay, because WordPress is primarily for blogging, your blog posts will show up on the front page of the website instead of a static front page that introduces your website. If you ware happy with that, fine, but if you want to alter it you can.

All you need to do is go to your WordPress site and go to the Dashboard. Then click on Pages and create a new page and call it Blog or News or whatever you want to name it. Publish it. Then under Appearance select the Customise option and down at bottom of the customise option, you will see an option to create a Static Front Page. There is a drop down menu to select which page you want for the front page of your site and then the next menu is to select the Blog page. Just select the Blog page that you created and then your static front page will show.

If you are happy with the Blog on your front page, then that is okay and you can just start to add ordinary pages to your site and organise them with the menu.

As far as appearance and template goes - click on Appearance and then Themes and you can add any new themes that you want. There are lots of good themes that you can install for free.

WordPress is the easiest of the CMS's, then Joomla and then Drupal, but that has become a lot easier since Drupal 7 and Drupal is my preference - you can do more with the modules and they tend to be free, but with WordPress you often have to pay to upgrade to get more features with the plugins.

Hi Jane --

I gave up on WordPress, Blogger, and Weebly. For me, used to iWeb, they all were like pulling teeth. So, I fired up my trusty iWeb, and went to GoDaddy for a domain. Worked like a charm. Their support will walk you through getting it up and running. I LOVE iWeb, and will continue to use it as long as I can still publish it.

Is there anything new/recommended to replace iWeb?
