My remote appears to be working but when I select and try to open an app (such as Netflix, YouTube or even Settings) it just freezes up and won't open. I've restarted several times, tried pairing the remote and using the remote from my phone. I can cursor through and the Apple box chimes when I click the app but then nothing happens. It takes approx 30 seconds for the screen to unfreeze but then nothing happens.

Your ATV may have lost its connection (verification) to the account in the App Store. Go to the App Store on your ATV and pick some free app (any will do). Download and launch that app. Now try your 3rd party apps directly. That's what worked to get all mine going again. (A second suggestion was to search for the app you're trying to launch in the App Store and try opening it from the "Open" button there in the app store.) Good luck!

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)
Thank you for this trick, I have the 4th and this did the work đ. I deleted one app(netflix) and reinstalled it, logged back in and all the other apps are back working.
In case you didn't notice the post is from July last year and therefore can't be an Apple TV 4 and therefore doesn't have an app store.
