I have been playing my xbox one on my TV which is quite old and the quality is low... I had the idea of playing my Xbox on my mac desktop for better quality. My friend hooks up his hdmi cable to his monitor but when i tried, there is no hdmi slot on the computer...?

You don't know which model you bought? Since you also didn't mention which OS version you are running, it is impossible to help as there are dozens of different models/years with different ports/cables.
Please post your OS version. And,
go to the Apple, click on about this Mac, then on more Info and/or System Info/Report (depends on your OS version), and post a screenshot of the Hardware Overview (everything except the serial number).
