Q: Mail partially loads and then locks up

Since I installed 10.4 update, Mail app loads inbox titles, but won't display body to the right, won't download new mail, and locks up.  I get the spinning color wheel of death.  Must force quit to get out.  Anybody else had this problem?

Yes, I'm having the same problem. Since the new 10.10.4 version.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder

from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.

A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:

              Envelope Index

              ExternalUpdates.storedata

Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.

Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.

Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

Thanks.  I saw this fix on an earlier question and tried to find the folders but couldn't.  Now with your reply, I'll try again if I have the same problem.

I wound up reinstallling the entire OS 10.4 with the latest version and Mail started working again.  So, I am guessing there must've been something corrupted?  Or like you say the envelope files were messed up.  When I try to "rebuild" the mailboxes, does that do the same thing as your removing the "envelope" files and forcing a re-indexing?

    Hi Bob,

I tried re-installing the entire OS 10.4.04 from the app store.  It took a while to download and I had to free up space on the HD, but it seems to be working now.  You can try what Linc Davis recommended first; I didn't get his reply before reinstalling the OS.  Cheers!  SS

    Hi Linc,

The first time it worked. However as a I close and open Mail again the same problem occurr.

I have to quit Mail (force quit). I notice it generates the files again, almost the same size.
