Q: iTunes has stopped working. There is not enough memory

After the recent upgrade, I receive this notice whenever there is a change in the library. Checking using taskmaster in windows 7 shows plenty of memory.

null, iOS 8.4, iTunes

Well that's most odd. I'm afraid I don't know details about iTunes resource needs, but it would seem you have sufficient memory present in your system. Are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows? And which version? I'm guessing 7, but I might be wrong.

I agree it's very odd. It looks like iTunes gradually over time uses all available memory then freezes.

    Running 64 bit Windows 7.

I think it is time you did that full tear down and rebuild. Your screenshot suggests that you're running 32-bit iTunes, but if you didn't actively choose the for older video cards version then you should be on the full 64-bit version by now.

I completed a full tear down and rebuild this morning. The library reloaded and I began to do some edits. The program froze after about 15 minutes with plenty of cpu and memory capacity. Now what?.

Which installer did you use? iTunes6464setup.exe or iTunes64setup.exe? Whichever you used try the other one.

See also Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support. It may be worth seeing what happens with a clean library in a different profile, or a clean library in the same profile.

Installer: I simply clicked on the iTunes download button here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

There was no option that I saw for one over the other. What did I miss?

At the download site, what installer is used?

Looks like the installer was iTunes6464setup.exe. I cannot locate iTunes64setup.exe.

Are there any known issues related to library size? My collection is large. I want to retain iTunes but with140,000 tracks I may have to move to Media Monkey which doesn't seem to have any issues.

I have always been able to play iTunes video playback (never received an alert) so I wouldn't think I'd need to use iTunes64Setup.exe since "older video cards" is a relative term. Older meaning more than 5 years? As I said, no problem playing video in iTunes.

Ignore the label. It is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit core components, similar to every 64-bit release prior to 12.1 in January 2015. It may be more stable on your particular system. I have been involved in dozens of threads where it has proved to be a useful workaround for both the original poster and others who have come across the thread later. It costs but a little time to try, and if it makes no odds at least you will have gathered a little more data about your particular issue. See the Further information area of the user tip for the direct download link.

OK, will do. I'm assuming I don't have to delete anything before doing this, correct?

The lock-up appears to happen on a write request (i.e. making changes to a file). Does that tweak anything for you? Earlier you said

"Another thought, if possible disable write behind caching on the drive holding the library." I'd like to know that I did this correctly.

For now, on to the other installer.

Just to be clear, you are recommending the following: iTunes64Setup.exe

For best results follow the steps in the second box of the troubleshooting tip before reinstalling.

    Yes this version:

    • iTunes 12.2.1.16 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) (Windows 7 or later) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-07-13)

And yes write behind caching is disabled according to your screenshot.

    Installed as directed itunes64setup.exe (2015-07-13)

Doing simple edits on the library still cause iTunes to lock up.

This is all very frustrating and time consuming. I hope that a solution can be found.

    What's next?

Further to my last message, with the iTunes installer, is it expected that only the 32 bit and not the 64 bit file would be installed?Capture.JPG

Yes, that is expected with the iTunes64setup.exe version. If it hasn't helped then you may as well switch back to the full fat 6464 installer.

Does your library include lots of smart playlists? The more of these there are the more work has to be done refreshing them after each edit. The new Apple Music and iCloud Music Library features have probably added to these overheads, even if you don't use them.

Your library is about twice the size of mine. I expect to get a sluggish response from time-to-time, but it doesn't lock solid, and I can't recall the last time I saw a could not save library warning.

Didn't change a thing this morning. I did some edits and it froze. I left it alone for about 30 mins and it came back to life with this message:

    Capture.JPG

Does that mean anything to you?

Answer for "smart lists", I'm assuming you mean "playlists" - not don't have a lot but one entry has a link to 1,000 titles Relationships) and another has a link to 500 albums (Rolling Stone). I've never had an issue with these before:
