Was wondering if I could charge my phone while downloading from app store.
Would that damage the battery or it's fine?

No reputable company would design a device that would be damaged by such action. Common sense.
Right. Actually, it is recommended that you connect the phone to the wall adapter when doing large downloads. You can also enable iCloud Backup, then leave the phone connected to power and WiFi overnight. The phone will back up automatically once a day when connected to power and WiFi.
As far as I'm concerned, that's the ONLY way to download. Apps are not a big deal but you don't ever want to download an IOS update without the charger connected.

charging never damaged the battery as long as you use a certified charger you can operate your ios device as you see fit while charging
