I am running 4gb on my 24 inch early 2008 iMac, I was wondering if this could be upgraded to 8gb, what's the worst that could happen?

Something will go wrong if the computer is upgraded past 6GB; it'll likely be that if upgraded to 8GB and more than 4GB is in use at any given time, the computer will slow down so much that it'll become unusable.

So you recommend that I only upgrade to 6gb RAM?
As my mac is very slow at opening apps and generally lags quite a bit.
May upgrade to 6gb and then wipe and reinstall my os x, do you think that would help?
