Q: Cannot get location data for all my images

After reading the "Does anyone else HATE the new Photos upgrade?" thread I found it echoed my frustration at a program that forces an unwanted (as it seems totally ill conceived and irrelevant to me) way of organizing my images. However, the main issue is that Photos has scrambled most of the date metadata, and even using the date correction tool manages to screw things up badly, so that the Years view is just a huge mess. Even worse, is I have lost all the location data - I get totally sick of keep reading articles that say " just open Get Info and there is a little map", well there isn't on any of my images that used to all have locations, there isn't a location shown in the years view either, and I can't even find a way of editing it back in. Can anyone advise how to resolve this cluster buck?

Even worse, is I have lost all the location data -

Any locations you signed in iPhoto or Aperture or GPS tags you assigned should have migrated.

How did you migrate your photo library? Did you open the iPhoto Library or Aperture library in Photos or did you import the photos? It looks like your library did not migrate correctly. Did Photos crash during the migration? Have there been any error messages?

It might help to repeat the migration after repairing your original iPhoto Library or Aperture library using the library first aid tools.

Hi, thanks for a quick response.

I used the migration assistant thing, changing from my old iMac to the 5K Retina iMac, last November. Then just updated the OS in accordance with the updates. I've only just got around to working on my photo library, when I checked I found all was scrambled, but no error messages. So I decided to start again, importing from Finder Pictures folder.TBH I'm unbelievably disappointed with Photos, so unintuitive and buggy. I'm not a Mac expert, but did look after 40 PCs and servers as part of my last job, so I'm not totally green. Even when I try and adjust the date on more than one image, it seems to correct some ok, and give some random dates.  I can also see that Photos  or whatever often uses the 'last modified' date, not the created date, which is ridiculous. makes the whole design concept of Photos fatally flawed. And I miss the big map with location pins, although at one point it did appear but I can't find it again. So any idea how I restore all the location info?

    Cheers

    Dave

Oh, I have just found I can still access iPhoto, and all the locations stuff is working fine. Does this mean that I need to do a separate "migration" from iPhoto to Photos? Why does Apple make this stuff so convoluted?! (I still can't get used to having a keyboard with no hashtag or forward delete keys either!)

YYou can go back to using iPhoto. It's still in your Applications folder and iPhoto Library remains unaffected.

If you need to update iPhoto first, follow these instructions Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

Yes.   When you open your iPhoto Library in Photos most of the metadata you assigned in iPhoto should be transferred correctly, your albums, your locations, the dates you corrected.

See this link:  How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

If you simply imported the original photos to Photos, the work you did in iPhoto will have been lost.

To migrate your iPhoto Library to Photos drag the iPhoto Library onto the photos icon.  Photos will create a migrated copy.

Finally found the iPhoto library and your recommendation basically worked, so thanks very much for that, much appreciated.  I just had to move all theiPhoto Events into Albums to keep it clean.

Photos still seems vey buggy though. Trying to change the date on more than 2 or 3 images results in a totally random set of dates, and Titles seem to disappear and re-appear at will?

The biggest irritation at present is how to arrange Album images in an order that is not the date - as these are hopelessly compromised. Can you advise if this is possible?

Thanks again for the help so far.

Thanks again for the help so far.

You can arrange albums right now only alphabetically by name or dragging them manually into the sequence you want.

To sort the albums by name go to the View menu and select "keep arranged by name"

I'd wait with investing too much work into arranging albums until the next version of Photos will be released in the fall.  The next version in MacOX  El Capitan will support more sort options for albums and smart albums.

You can only adjust the dates by a fixed offset  in Photos but not batch change it to the same date for multiple photos like you could in iPhoto.

I posted an Apple Script to batch change the date in the User Tip section  (Photos for Mac):

See:  Photos for Mac: Batch Change the Date and Time to a Fixed Date

Apple Script is not well supported in Photos. You will see plenty of timeout errors when you try it.
