"There was an error joining AirPort network" - HELP

Yesterday I bought the Belkin G+ Mimo Modem Router, I've set it up to connect to the internet - everything seems fine the now.

But...
I'm trying to setup the wireless internet with security encryption... Neighbor is home from uni and i don't want her accessing my wireless internet. I contacted Belkin to see how to set it up, they talked me through the "web interface" and how to activate it - pass phrase and key generated.

Now...
When I go wireless i click on the Airport and select the network "Belkin_Mimo" and it asks for a WEP Key: So i enter the key that was generate and click Connect...
However i get the following error message:

"There was an error joining AirPort network "Belkin Mimo"- OK or TRY AGAIN

I've tried the $ first then the wep key - but it still brings up the error message.

I've also tried all the different WEP Keys and different PassPhrases - there's about a foot between computer and router - so it's nothing to do with the signal.
Reset the router, and restored it back to factory settings.

=======

Belkin just phoned.

Talked me through different set-ups and settings. And still nothing - they said try with a windows computer - so i did. And the WEP security worked. And them said that there was something wrong with Apple computer and hung-up.

Any suggestions why my PowerBook doesn't allow me to join the wireless network with WEP Security - it works fine without it, but i'd like to stop my neighbor from accessing it when she comes home from university.

THANKS

I'm experiencing the same thing. I've gone through two different routers now. My wife's MacBook works fine, but my PowerBook G4 won't establish a wireless connection with either of them. I can connect via ethernet cable just fine, but any attempt to connect to the wireless side is met with "There was an error joining the Airport network ...".

I am having the same exact issue- My work laptop (dell), my wifes laptop (tohsiba) and my kids iBook all connect with no issues. However my G5 2.0 PPC lost its connection after an update in late sept. - prior to that there were no issues - I am convinced that is was the last update that did it in. I now have a 50' ethernet cord going from my office to my livingroom.

By the way I have a Linksys g WAP

More info on my setup:

D-Link WBR-1310 (home): Powerbook won't connect, other work fine

Belkin F5D7230-4 v6002 (home): Powerbook won't connect, others work fine

Linksys WRT54GS (office): Powerbook connects just fine

Similarly, the error behavior began with me after a series of software updates in September as well. I believe it was 10.4.8 and iTunes 7, perhaps an Airport update as well.

Following the advice of another thread I created a new user account. Strangely, this new account was able to connect to the Belkin router at home when my old account could not. However, after putting the Powerbook to sleep and waking it again, the new account exhibited the same behavior (error joining network) as the old account.

I've got support requests in to Belkin and D-Link. Perhaps they can shed some light on the subject.

I'm having this same error. I've tried with putting the $ in front of one of the 4 keys my Linksys WRTP54G and also tried the passphrase with and without the quotes around it. I also changed my passphrase to be 13 characters like the support docs say to do.

I'm going to look for a answer for a couple more days and if nothing then take it into the Apple store. If I can't use it with the security turned on then I can't use it for work since they require all wireless security to be turned on.

I've had somewhat better success with the Beklin router with "Use Interface Robustness" enabled on my Powerbook. When it does work, the signal strength is marginal (3 feet from the router), and my wife's MacBook still works without any futzing.

First, I suggest that you use WPA instead of WEP as WEP is no longer considered secure.

If you must use WEP, I suggest that you use a 128-bit (26 character) hex key and NOT use the passphrase feature to generate the key on your Belkin. Then use this same 128-bit hex key when connecting from AirPort. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106424)
