Q: Setting up Photos.

I was having probs with iphoto so deleted that (I had transferred by photos to an external hd).  Now I am trying to set up Photos but it is trying to transfer photos and telling me I don't have enough room.  I don't really want any photos transferred back.  I cannot get any further as it wants to transfer the photos. What can I do???

We need more info. When you say you transferred the photos to an external drive do you mean the iPhoto Library or the individual photo files? How is the external drive formatted & how is it connected to your Mac? How large is the external drive? How much space does your photo collection on it use?

Assuming the iPhoto Library is on the drive, it is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), & there is adequate free space on it, Photos should be able to migrate it to a Photos Library on the same drive. In this case you won't need free space on it equal to the existing iPhoto Library because the photo files (but not the databases & other support files) will be shared. (See Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support for more about that.)

Otherwise, you can create a new, empty Photos Library (hold down the option key when launching the app & click the "Create new ..." button) & start fresh.
