Q: iPhoto: Pictures not appearing

I am using 9.5.1 iPhoto.  Some of the photos in the albums (a lot of them actually) do not display. What I mean by this is the album opens, there are little boxes where each photo should be but the photos don't display.

Anyone else have this problem?  Can it be fixed?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Little boxes with dashed outlines like marching ants?

In that case I'd try to rebuild the thumbnails in iPhoto.

Run the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools.

    • Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library, but don't overwrite any older backups.
    • To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the options-command keys ⌥⌘ while double clicking your iPhoto Library.
    • Keep the keys held down firmly until the First Aid panel appears.
    • Then select  "Rebuild thumbnails" from the First Aid pane.
    • If this does not yet fix it, run "Rebuild Database".

What happened before this problem first occurred? DIs you move your iphoto Library? DIs iPhoto crash? Did your store the library from Time Machine?

This problem has existed since I upgraded to Mavericks when it first came out.

How do I copy the iPhoto library?  I'm sorry I'm such a beginner at this!

I will try running the First Aid Tools later this week when I have time.

    Thank you!

If you have an external drive drag the iPhoto Library to that drive.

Or, if you do not have an external drive, select the library in the Finder and press the key combination ⌘D for "File > Duplicate".  But you will need sufficient free storage on your drive to accommodate the extra copy and still have enough working storage for the system.

I have an external drive, Acomdata which I believe is the old Mini Pal from my previous Mac Mini.  How can I tell if it has enough space to copy the iPhoto library into it and how much space iPhoto is using?  What do I do with the copy once I run the First Aid program?

    Connect your external drive.

Then click the -icon in the upper left corner of your display  and select the item "About this Mac". This will open a panel. In this panel click the "Storage" tab.  It will show how many free storage you have on your drives.

Then select your iPhoto Library in the Finder and look at it with the Finder window set to column view:  You can see the size of the library there and see, if it will fit onto the drive.  Keep at least 20GB free on any drive.
