As someone who uses my iMac almost constantly every day, I know I would be frustrated if I knew it started up but could see nothing on the display. Let's see if we can get you back up and running.
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article - Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays.
