Q: Double tap for Apple Pay doesn't seem to work

I have my iPhone set up for Apple Pay, here in the UK, and have set up 4 cards on my watch. If I tap the Passbook icon on the watch I can see the credit cards at the top. (I have not yet tried to use them in a shop)

If I tap the bottom button once I see the messaging dial, as usual, but double-tapping it doesn't appear to do anything.

Do I need to be in range of an NFC receiver for this to work?

Or do I need to use this once, through the Passbook app, for it to be available as a shortcut?

OK, I've just solved this double-tap problem on my Watch.

As part of the screen was not working, I took my Watch in to the Apple Store today. (I also had a problem with Bluetooth headphones, and this issue)

The Genius suggested unpairing the Watch and pairing it again, which I didn't think would actually help with the screen issue, but surprisingly ALL THREE problems were solved by this.

its easy to do, it just takes a little waiting around, as most things (apart from Apple Pay and music) will be restored automatically for you.

I would recommend trying it.

With cards registered on your Apple Watch, double pressing the side button should cause your Apple Watch to display a picture of your default payment card along with "Ready ...." at the top and "Hold Near Reader to Pay" at the bottom.

You don't have to be anywhere near an NFC receiver for this to work as I have described.

There's a video clip of how that should work here under "An easier way to pay".

Yes, that is what I was expecting to happen (I see that same screen when I use the Passbook app on the Watch instead of the shortcut)

Have you definitely added payment cards to your Apple Watch (which must be done separately from adding them to your iPhone)? [no offence intended - just trying to be thorough!]

Beyond that, I'd suggest contacting Apple Support, as it sounds like a fault.

You cannot use Apple Pay if you have done any of the following:

Unpaired your Apple Watch
Disabled your passcode
Turned off wrist detection

Thanks for your suggestions

None of those three apply, (and it does prompt to "double-click to pay" when I select a card in the Passcode app on the watch.)

Have you had any luck getting it sorted, I have noticed the same thing and one of the guys in Apple store couldn't get it to work either!

Not yet, but I am going into the local Apple Store tomorrow (with a partially-working screen digitiser problem) and will try seeking help for this there, too.

I suspect you may simply not be pressing it twice quickly enough.

My wife has the same problem and managed to do it about 3 times out of a hundred at first, but is now getting the hang of it. It's nothing to do with the watch in her case, if I lean over her and operate the watch myself while it's on her wrist it works everytime.

Have just been on to Apple support and my issue is down to having iOS 9 beta on my phone and that is why the double click isn't working.

I am an iPhone developer, actually, but the iPhone I use with the watch is still on iOS 8 .4 (I've just double-checked)

Thanks for the suggestion, Winston.

I am fairly sure I am pressing it quickly, both presses occur within half a second. (nothing happens, if I do it slower I see it go to the favourites page, sometimes twice.)
