I have tried and tried to set up Apple email on my Mac with the settings I found on a search. Nothing works...I am on Mavericks and using DSL with wifi.

Thank you for the information....my problem is that "mail doctor" is a very light gray and is not an option to open...can this be fixed?

Without being there it's difficult to determine what you are having trouble with. Setting up a new email account is VERY straight forward, that is what I am assuming you are attempting to do. The instructions for doing so are Mail - Prefrences - Accounts and click the + symbol at the bottom of the box that looks like:
And follow the on-screen directions. If you are not attempting to add a new mail box, please be explicit on what you are trying to achieve. Two other options are calling AppleCare (free if you have AppleCare coverage) or visiting a Genius (also free) at the local Apple Store.
