Q: Brand new iPad Air makes no sounds for notifications...

I have a brand new iPad Air 64 gb with LT E. There is no sound on/off button on this iPad like my old iPad 2. the new iPad Air makes no sounds for things such as sent mail, new mail, text messages, FB notifications, etc. I have enabled sounds in the settings, turned up the volume on the iPad itself, but no sound. I do however have sound if I play music, play a video etc. More than likely I am missing a simple setting, but I can't figure it out. Still under warranty but I've had no time to go to the Apple Store. Can anyone help with my muted iPad?

thank you!

iPad Air, iOS 8.0.2, LTE

    Settings/Sounds, then make sure the Ringer and Alerts slider is set to an audible level. If you want to change this volume level control with the buttons on the side of the iPad, be sure to checkmark the Change with Buttons setting. If this setting is OFF, you can only change the ringer & alerts volume here. The buttons will have no effect. This is done purposely in case you want to always hear the ringer & alerts but want to turn the rest of the volume down. Very useful in case you forgot that you turned the volume down with the buttons, then are not hearing the ringer and alerts because you turned those down as well because of the setting.

    Also, see the following regarding the Side Switch setting:

    OK, your post has confused me. You state you have an "iPad Air". This unit DOES have the Side Switch. Then later on, you state your iPad does NOT have a Side Switch. So I am assuming you have an iPad Air 2. This is the only current iPad that does NOT have the physical Side Switch. In this case, my second post regarding the Side Switch can be disregarded. Another way to check which Air model you have is in the following way:

    Look at the bottom edge:

    iPad Air 2

    .  =speaker holes

    O= Lightning connector

    ...............O...............

    iPad Air 1

    : = speaker holes

    O= Lightning connector

    :::::::::::::::O:::::::::::::::

    To mute/unmute the volume, you now swipe up on any Home Screen just above the Home button. This will bring up Control Center. In Control Center, you'll find an icon of a bell with a slash through it. This now takes the place of the physical Side Switch. See:

    This helped me .  I wonder why they do not send out a notice about this when you get a new I Pad  .
