Q: can I burn a blu ray from my final cut pro x

Or do I need another program like Toast? And if so, how's the quality? Is it better with Toast?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Yes, you can burn a Blu Ray disc directly in FCP X.

However, you will require a bluray burner that is Mac compatible.

Toast will not do a better job, although the latest version has more in the way of customizing menus (don't expect too much though).

Also, you can author an AVCHD disc using your regular Mac burner and normal DVD discs as long as you keep the time to around 20 minutes.

This type of disc will require a bluray player for replay and also a third party app to replay on a Mac computer.

Thanks for the answer. But just to be clear, I'm talking about a movie not a data blu ray. Will it still do that?

Yes, with appropriate gear as mentioned.

What blu ray burner do you recommend for best quality?

I have the older version of this:

It's been rock solid for several years. It even works over Thunderbolt laced into my Belkin docking station.

Other brands should be Ok as well, just ensure they are Mac compatible.

If you search this forum others asked the same question.

As far as which brand gives better results: that has got little to do with the burner or discs used.

Final results are about the whole production chain from the person who shoots the original footage, codecs used in editing, type of exports etc.
