Refurbished MacBook

I just purchased a refurbished macbook off of eBay. It currently has OS X 10.5.8. It will not sync or recognize my iPhone 5 with iTunes and from what I can find through google it's that I don't have the most current OS X available. However, when I click on "system updates" it tells me that I have the most current update available, which I know isn't true. I'm new to the MacBook world as I've only had iPhones and iPads so I'm not sure what all I need to do to get my new refurbished MacBook up to current. Thanks for the help!

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.

If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.

If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and once done, if desired, open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

You need to get a Sow Leopard DVD

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

and and upgrade to Snow Leopard and then fully update SL via updates. The you can go to the Mac App store and update as far as your Mac allows.

You will either:

- Stay at SL

- Go to Lion if you meet

OS X Lion - Technical Specifications

To get Lion

Lion is a paid update

- Go to Yosemite if you meet
