Q: If I bring my own wireless router and Apple TV with me while travelling, will I need an internet connection to stream already purchased movies from my ipad to the tv that I will hook up to the Apple TV?
I often travel and have many movies stored on my iPad. I have no issues bringing my own wireless router and Apple TV with me, so I'd like to hook my Apple TV up to the TV, plug in my wireless router, connect my iPad and Apple TV to the network I create, and hopefully stream my movies. That way the whole family isnt crowded around the iPad watching a movie when its raining.

Yeah, it looks as though you will need authentication via internet. If connecting to hotel's network it may require logging in via web page (which ATV doesn't have access to), in which case you would need to contact the provider or get someone at the hotel to help connect.
Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
With peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device and Apple TV don't have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
To use peer-to-peer AirPlay, you need one of these devices with iOS 8 or later:
- iPhone 5 or later
- iPad mini or iPad (4th generation or later)
- iPod touch (5th generation or later)
You can stream content to your Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later) with software version 7.0 or later. Find out which Apple TV model you have.
Make sure that both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
*If you want to stream iTunes Store content, you also need an Internet connection.*
