Network PrefPane stuck at " 1 Infinite Loop "

I decided I would try the DNS server "ADD" trick when troubleshooting an ongoing issue with my Pismo's download speed. (Long story, and I think irrelevant to this particular issue)

When I choose  > System Preferences... > Network, the PrefPane opens, bit very quickly alerts me like this

User uploaded file

When I click [OK] button OR ENTER/RETURN keys, the alert goes away - then immediately returns = REPEATEDLY, infinitely

If I am very coordinated, I can manage to key ENTER and click [Configure] in rapid succession - resulting in the display of this, MY GOAL

User uploaded file

However, that pesky alert message quickly returns! I can continue my rapid fire technique, even managing to paste " 8.8.8.8 " into the DNS Servers: field - BUT - the ENTER key that 'dismisses" the alert also clears the DNS IP address.

My first thought was to find the file that holds the DNS IP address string and edit it in BBEdit - but then I realized that without being able to modify the Pref, I could not deduce the filename easily by modification date - AND - since no custom DNS strings exist, I would have no way of knowing "where" in the file to put it!!

I am looking for:

  1. a fix for my PrefPane alert "Infinite Loop" (pun intended), or
  2. aid in locating and editing the Pref file (some ',plist' ?) adding the DNS IPs, or
  3. BOTH

Thanks in advance, amigos

Hey, long time since I've seen this, it was caused by a Security update!

To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

Try this cure for Security update...

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1730909&tstart=0Dead link,thanks Apple. 😟

The locations are actually... delete these files.

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.nat.plist

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON?

The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.

Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...

Followup...

The DNS entries you gave + the Google DNSs - 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 MAY have ironed out the SpeedTest results - BUT - the results were never really consistent until the end of a series of test runs - test are HTML 5 based - no Flash in 10.4fox v.31.8.0 - Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; PPC Mac OS X 10.4; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0 TenFourFox/G3

graphed results > http://testmy.net/compID/6620220017

bottom line is that the results average are ABOUT the expected norms for my speed plan with TimeWarnerCable - some well below the minimum thy expect, some well above the Top Speed for the subscription level

I do not know what to believe with these scattershot results. I will go by "feel" for a bit and retest again at intervals.

there was one more .plist in the folder you cited (5 in all) - " com.apple.PowerManagement.plist " - it reminded me that I am still plagued with PMU / battery issue that I cannot resolve - folks have been helpful, but I would appreciate your fresh eyes (if you haven't already)

Pismo new battery flashing light then dead

I deleted the aforementioned file after making a copy first to inspect. it is XML "Energy Saver" value settings - and has not yet been recreated, even after opening the Energy Saver PrefPane (settings had reverted to default) and closing it again - I have a vintage utility - XBattery.app - that was helpful early on, but now indicated that the battery is not charging. I will let it run to see if it records something interesting just in case.

Gracias, mi amigo

I have doubts about those HTML5 speed tests myself, at the very least it's not a real world test where generally visiting one page will actually be contacting 100s of sites, & are sort of optimistic.

Using that same site you did I get...

Minimum :: 2.65 Mbps | Middle :: 5.04 Mbps | Maximum :: 6.25 Mbps

This is on a going away Wimax service that normally does 300k to 600k maximum in the real world, generally 20-50k on Apple sites.

I doubt the Flash based tests myself - I get wildly different results, even with different products by the same company!

there are arguments on the testmy.net site explaining its methods and poo-pooing Flash based

http://www.timewarnercable.com/en/support/speed-test.html

AND its standalone Flash tester

http://speedtest.texas.rr.com/

are TWC branded variant (same thing, 2nd is what is embedded in 1st) of the "OOKLA" SpeedtestPlus tester by MegaPath

http://www.megapath.com/speedtestplus/

a pretty robust tester, and what I used historically before Firefox axed Flash

another MegaPath tester (simplified) is the SpeakEasy tester

http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/

TimeWarnerCable is married to their tester's results - I get comparable results with SpeakEasy and TWC's standalone in Safari (Flash) VERY LOW

MegaPath SpeedtestPlus (requires running Safari to get Flash to work) and testmy.net (both Safari and 10.4fox) get comparable results MUCH Higher and generally acceptable

Jul 22, 2015 4:17 PM in response to BDAqua

with 512MB of RAM - I keep it open always 😎 as 10.4fox seems greedy and Apple is no help - other sites do NOT gobble up RAM anything like here = client side computing, ya know.

I get comparable anecdotal speeds looking at it - wish it had a History and graph like the newer versions

I concocted an objective test by dumping a .mov on DropBox and then manually downloading from the webpage location == similar results to the testmy.net & MegaPath tests.

Too many variables in all these that can't be known or controlled - the source server is main one.

I am satisfied that I get somewhere between 60% & 120% of what I signed up for - they only promise consistent 80% so I guess that's what I'm getting - NOW.

lemme know if you have the time or inclination to look at my battery thread - here comes a helpie!!

Jul 22, 2015 5:02 PM in response to BDAqua

2010thanx anyway. If anyone you know is capable, I am at wit's end. My best guesses are the Power Management Unit or the AC Adapter computer side of the chain - the female 'socket' was busted and I had it replaced in 2010 - or both - or neither, leaving the funky-a s s e d battery.

Atari, huh? Showtime is playing a documentary - " Atari: Game Over " (2015) - pretty cool - "An exploration of the decline of Atari and its secret burial of unsold "E.T." game cartridges in a New Mexico landfill."

I guess that's it, amigo. See you at the water-cooler
