Q: Problems with Photos, Raw files and Aperture

Hi,

I have struggled to get my head around Photos since it was introduced, and it has made my work much more complicated and time consuming than before (I'm sure this is not how it should be!). The problems I have are listed below. I am very grateful for your help.

1. I cannot swiftly open an album from Photos in Aperture (please note that I prefer to continue working with my images in Aperture). Please let me know how I can open and/or export an album to Aperture.

2. I cannot swiftly get the raw version of the photo in Photos. Currently I have to open the photo, click on Edit in the right corner and then click Edit in the menu and choose Raw as original. I want to have Raw as the original on all images from the start. Please let me know how to do this.

3. I cannot export an album with raw as originals. Please let me know how I do this (for example, when I want to back up my photos). In Aperture, it was very simple to export an album's files, both raw and jpeg, originals and copies, together.

4. Currently I am struggling with Photos and prefer to import photos from memory cards directly to Aperture, however I can't seem to find where I change the settings from automatically importing to Photos. Please advise and how I change these settings.

5. A number of projects from my iphoto library has disappeared after my Mac automatically moved files to Photos. Where do i find these albums/projects?

Thank you very much in advance, I really appreciate your advice.

Kind regards

Emi

Photo is nothing like Aperture, sorry to say.  SO what you want to do is not easy.

    1. "Please let me know how I can open and/or export an album to Aperture."      You can select the photos in an album and use "Share to Aperture", but it is not possible to export a partial library to Aperture or to open a Photos library in Aperture.  The migration is one-way only, from Aperture to Photos but not back.
    2. " I cannot swiftly get the raw version of the photo in Photos."   There is no way. It can only be done one by one.  If you want to have the RAW photos as the originals import only the RAW photos to Photos.  Sort them in the Finder and backup the JPEGs for later reference and only import the RAW files.
    3. ". I cannot export an album with raw as originals"  You should be able to select the photos in the album and export them with "File > Export > Export .. unmodified originals"
    4. "however I can't seem to find where I change the settings from automatically importing to Photos."  Change the options in the Iamge Capture application.  Insert your card, open Image Capture, select the card, then click the disclosure triangle in the lower left corner. Change the Autoimport options.  You will have to do this for each card separately.
    5. "5. A number of projects from my iphoto library has disappeared after my Mac automatically moved files to Photos. Where do i find these albums/projects?"  Not all projects are supported. If the projects could not be recreated in Photos they will be missing, See this help text:  How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

    Sorry for the bad news.

    Hi Léonie,

Just wanted to say thank you very much for your excellent reply, I really appreciate it! I've tried your recommendations regarding the points that have a solution and it works. For the other things, I'll stick with Aperture for now, it's unfortunate that they have discontinued it without a proper replacement but there's nothing we can do about it.

Thanks again and all the best!

    You're welcome, Emi.

For the time being is Aperture still supported. And the next version of Photos will bring improvements, as announced on this page:  Apple — OS X El Capitan

We will be able to use external editors via app extension, and location data, batch change titles, more sorting options for photos and albums.  It will still be far from a professional photo database, but I have migrated the part of my Aperture library that I want to share between my Macs to Photos.

I hope, that with the help of third party extensions Photos will become a versatile tool.
