Q: Looking to connect an HDMI cable to an older MacBook Pro

Need to show a slideshow created on a MacBook Pro early 2011 running OS X Yosemite through a projector via HDMI cable. Can someone tell me which adapter I will need to purchase to connect laptop to HDMI cable and to a projector so that both audio and video work on the projected screen? Thank you!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), iPhoto, iTunes, GarageBand '08 & '11

My late 2011 works, but I know yours may be different since it's early 2011, but based on this Apple tech note, audio should work over Mini DisplayPort to HDMI in your model:

Even though you already got a couple of answers, here's one more link, only because it's on sale and less expensive than the other links, and is also the one I use:

Monoprice Mini DisplayPort 1.1 to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support

I think it is also very important to add that you do NOT need the $34.95 Moshi adapter from the Apple Store that was linked above. Why not?
It's a 4K adapter and I don't think our 2011 MacBook Pros support 4K.
You're probably not connecting to a 4K projector either.
At $34.95, it's almost 9 times more expensive than the adapter I linked to, because you're paying for those 4K features you can't even use.

Yes, it may be a better deal, depending.

SMC73, if the projector already has a long enough HDMI cable attached to it (as in many meeting rooms), you just need the adapter. If you think you'll need to supply your own cable, you might want the adapter cable Oglethorpe most recently posted, but make sure it is the right length.

I carry the adapter because I never know where the projector is going to be. It might be on the ceiling with a very long HDMI cable already routed around the room to the presentation area. And I also use it because the adapter is extremely compact, which helps me travel light since I usually need it on the road.

All very good suggestions and I am contemplating them all. Thank you. I was asked to supply an HDMI cable and thanks to your advice, I will be sure to find out how long it needs to be. I just want to be sure that whatever I get will work! I have read many comments on other forums who have expressed frustration that after connecting this particular laptop via cable and adaptor, the sound won’t work. And as this slideshow is for a rehearsal dinner at a restaurant, I want to be sure I have both video and audio!
