Q: Help! Mouse is disfunctional and computer is unresponsive

I plugged a device into my computer that I thought was an external hard drive.  A message came up for "Bluetooth setup assistance" and that no wireless mice or track pads were found.  In that instant my mouse stopped working and my computer stopped responding.  I unplugged the device from my computer and shut down the computer.  When I tried to restart my computer, that same message popped up and I could not log on to the computer.  I tried again to shut down, unplug everything thetrue plug turn on power andrestart computer, with no success. It is still looking for a wireless mouse and will not respond. (I do not have a wireless mouse) Please help.  Sorry, I don't know the operating system other than OSX.

PowerMac, OS X Server

    First try "Safe Boot"

    1. startup our Mac
    2. Hold the SHIFT key down until you get the login screen
    3. login
    4. Hold the SHIFT key down until the Finder settles down

    let us know the results

UNfortunately, this did not work for me.  My mouse remains disfunctional so I cannot enter my pass code and even though I continue to hold the shift key down, the dialogue box for the blue tooth comes up and continues to search for a wireless mouse.

    Long shot, but try this...

reset FW bus, same goes for USB reset...

    Reset the Firewire bus

If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:

    1. Shut the machine down.

    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.

    3. leave it for 10 minutes.

    4. Connect back up and reboot.

If by "THis" you mean the ONE troubleshooting routine that BDAqua posted, you should click his link and try the suggested steps in the first section - IN Order.

I'll put my $$ on zapping the PRAM, but I lose bets all the time.

Yeah! I finally got the computer up and running!  Thank-you everyone for your help.  I turned off the computer and unplugged everything overnight.  This morning I plugged everything back in and held down the shift key when I turned on the computer.  I was able to key in my code and get back on line!
