Macbook goes to sleep randomly

I read this thread thinking there was no way the magnet answer applied to me... until I remembered I always carry my AirPods in my pocket and the magnet in that satisfyingly clicky lid could be strong enough to trigger sleep. And it was.

On my Macbook this is that spot when it turns off. My case for Mac has magnets, so when I put my Mac on the case, the case's magnet exactly under that spot. That's why it turns off

Hi I am having the same issue I notice it on my MacBook Pro 13 inch when the screen randomly went off and it wouldn't come back on again this machine is about-year-old then two weeks ago I brought a new MacBook for myself and that randomly went on and off I took it into the Apple store they've swapped it out and give me a new MacBook but once again this was doing the same thing. To make the screen come back on you have to tilted the whole computer towards you then it suddenly seems to come back on clearly there is a software update issue as both of my macs are having the same problem not very good from Apple as I've told them I've rang them and nothing is being done about it not very good from Apple bearing in mind these devices cost over £3000. Oh and by the way don't ring AppleCare as they cannot help that tell you to take it back to the shop as this is my 2rd macbook in 2 weeks and it is still the same apple needs to stop hiding the problem

Same issue here! 12-inch MacBook. Tilting the whole computer revives it. touchpad, power button, nothing helps. Apple, acknowledge and please fix!

I SUGGEST THAT APPLE GETS THIS SORTED ASAP.

Me too - Me too!!!! I am so glad I found this thread. I am on my second MacBook 12 inch that has this problem. Working with my local apple business group but they have not figured this one out. Obviously this is a problem since I (and one other post tomorrow) replaced my machine and am having the same problem on the replacement machine. It seems to be ok when the computer is brand new but it gets progressively more frequent. Now just tilting up the computer does not always solve the problem - it is getting more difficult to revive. Help!

Please see my post on this thread. Have returned one computer for repair - they replaced the keyboard - which did nothing. Now on my second machine which is starting to show this problem with increasing frequency. Can you help?

Same issue with mine - I'm running BETA OS-X El Capitan so thought that might have something to do with it, but maybe not. Would be nice for Apple to acknowledge this as seems to be a hardware issue.

I 2nd this entire thread and all the responses. It worries me too. Frustrating at times as well. For me, it happens only when on battery. I also start to wonder if it only happens when I am near a window with sunlight? I will test it out and let you all know. I have taken it to my bed at night with battery and never had it happen but if im on battery near a window during the day, it can occur with full on sunlight. Optical screen feature or heat feature? I dont know...

It seems that I have the same problem! At first I thought something was wrong with the hinge of the display because moving the display/notebook around temporary solved the issue. But sometimes the screen stays blank longer, trackpad doesn't respond anymore and I need to wake the Macbook with the power button.

When using the Macbook on a flay surface (ie.a table) I don't experience this issue. But using it on the couch on my lap, this issue will arise. And also not instantly! So I'm also thinking about a combination of movement/light sensor and/or temperature of the Macbook.

I called Apple support but they haven't heard of the issue so suggested repairing it. Since the Macbook is 34 days old now, I wasn't able to get Dead on Arrival warranty and replacement. I really hate to loose the Macbook for weeks for repair. Especially if this might be fixable with a firmware update.

Hopefully Apple is reading these threads as well.

I was reading this post regarding the same issue on Macbook Pro:

And I realized that I as well am using a sleeve from Snugg with a magnet on it's lid. And then I realized that this issue only occurs when I use my Macbook on top of this sleeve! And it kinda makes sense you know. The Macbook display probably contains a magnet as well so the Macbook know's when the lid is closed. So the magnet in my sleeve is probably interfering with a magnetic sensor in the Macbook thru the bottom of the case.

This explains the fact that I couldn't reproduce the issue all the time, and it was't happening when I picked up the Macbook and fiddled around with the hinge of the lid.

I will try a few things for the next couple of days, but I'm quite confident that this will solve my issue.

Your reply could not have been better timed and spot on! I was at Panera when it started to happen again, all the while atop my SNUGG case-folio so as to not get it dirty. I could not access my laptop so I opened up my phone and had to check an email, albeit irately until I saw your response in my email. And tadaa, I could not believe it...i started to remember all the times it happened and yes, you are correct! I always had it on my case-folio which has the snap-magnets! I remember other attempts trying to recreate the same issue but could never do it when laying my bed with the case-folio away, etc, on my desk, etc. I only use the case-folio when I am out and about and that is only when it happened. I suspected sunlight but I think the magnetic interference is very possible...and I truly now know how important magnetic interference and electromagnetic interference can be since I do a lot of work with drones and the slightest interference from magnets can screw things up big time.

So I must say, as smart as I thought I was, as much of an academically prepared engineer that I am, as much as I thought I had investigated it, your analysis blows me away because it seems so simple and obvious but at the same time not so simple and obvious. I think you figured it out. I will also try to test this out more but I think you are right!

You deserve a Nobel peace Prize for this! I was literally hours away from wanting to sell this on ebay lol !

Glad you guys found a solution, but no case with magnets or other obvious magnets anywhere near mine and it's still doing it - more and more actually.
