CarPlay disconnects

Hi at all,


since 4 weeks I have a brand new car (Skoda Octavia) with built-in Apple CarPlay (it's an MIB2 system which is the same in the whole VW concern).

But from the very first day I have problems after connection my iPhone 6 with 8.4:

  • it's running for 10 minutes and then the connection is broken without any automatic re-connection
  • the iPhone is connecting and immediately disconnection. Then the infotainment system shows the error that the USB port is not supported (on iPhone no error message at all). When this is happening, I can only re-connect the phone when doing a reset (Home- and on/off-button pressed)

To hopefully solve this I did

  • several resets ((Home- and on/off-button pressed)
  • re-stored it as new iPhone, re-stored the iPhone with my backup (also with DFU mode, of course)
  • deleted the connections in my car and iPhone (under settings/general/CarPlay)
  • used three different original Apple Lighting cables
  • AND installed iOS 9 Public Beta 2 yesterday (with the same issues😠)
  • Called the Apple Support which suggested me all the points above (except the beta)


Finally, I took the iPhone 6 with iOS 8.4 of my girl friend and she has no CarPlay problems at all (really, I tested it 100 times for sure).


So my conclusions are:

  • The USB port in my car is ok
  • The light cable is ok
  • My iPhone is crap, at least the lightning port


Is there anybody who maybe had the same issues and could solve them? Maybe just my lightning port is defect.

Pretty much any security profile that is installed on your device will disrupt the connection between your Apple CarPlay radio and your phone. I had a security profile install to support my work email as required. I remove that. It didn't disconnect as often. I also had a security profile installed from a device called "Box"... it is an antivirus mechanism. Even after I uninstall this profile and it showed that there were no profiles installed on my phone… It was still disconnecting. I thought maybe it was my iPhone 6 Plus hardware. So I upgraded to the iPhone 7 Plus. I restored from my iCloud back up. It worked without disconnecting from Apple CarPlay radio for about half a day. And then almost every five minutes it would disconnect my phone again. So I tried one last ditch effort of erasing all of my data on my phone and resetting it back to factory defaults. I reinstall all apps except the security profiles. Now, my phone never disconnects.… So obviously it was the security profiles for the remnants of the security profiles that were still causing The phone to terminate a "suspicious connection." So the solution is make sure that you have the Bluetooth turned off… Or at least set that it's not searching to try and connect to your car; he properly certified iPhone cable from Apple to connect your iPhone to your car Apple CarPlay radio; and set up on your iPhone that never included any security profiles -- if you ever did have any security profiles you need to wipe your phone and start over without restoring from iCloud back up. Obviously it is a lot of work to wipe your phone and start over… Because you have to download all of your apps fresh and new from the App Store and sign into each of them again and re-organize your phone.

... oh, and as mentioned in previous posts from other people: i'm sure that you do not have any VPN profiles installed. Basically anything that can interrupt potentially the connection between your car and your phone: such as security profiles, VPN profiles, at times to connect to something inadvertently via Bluetooth, even Wi-Fi sometimes can be a disruptor (even though I have not found Wi-Fi to have that happen to me personally).

You go to Settings > General and toward the bottom, there is a "Profile" section. Right above "Profile" should be VPN.


Your mileage may / will vary, but I have found that having a large Apple Music library and having Apple Music enabled is the culprit for (almost) all of the disconnect issues I have in my 2016 Honda Civic. If I disable Apple Music, which I obviously don't want to do, then CarPlay works fantastically.


I personally never found messing around with profile and VPN settings made any bit of difference.

Additionally, an app or request to install a security profile is explicit... meaning that it would need your express permission with a pop up button that says "install." The iPhone doesn't allow a security profile (such as needed for some to install a work email account on their phone, or for a VPN) to be installed in the background by simply installing an app. If you had previously installed a security profile of any kind, you would know it. And as stated in a post above, you can see in the settings of the iPhone if a security profile is currently installed on your phone. My difficulty was that I had already uninstalled the security profile from my phone and got a new phone (I went from an iPhone 6 Plus to an iPhone 7 Plus)--- and restored from my iCloud backup and the same disconnect was still occurring. I had the app "Unlimited VPN". And even though I had uninstalled the VPN security profile (there were no security profiles any longer installed in my iPhone settings when I looked), inside the Unlimited VPN app, it showed the security profile still accessible and able to be activated (even though it was currently in the "off" position inside the app). I took my phone into the Apple Store and the apple representative told me that some remnants of the profile were left behind and most likely causing a corruption in my backup to iCloud- so that when I restored from iCloud back to my new iPhone 7 it was restoring back to a corrupted backup causing the same issue. When I cleared all data and reset my phone and downloaded all my apps again from the App Store (not restoring from and iCloud backup) my phone worked 99% better.


I did have an issue yesterday where my iPhone 7 plus disconnected several times from my car radio in my 2016 VW GTI. But some thing interesting happened while I was driving... during the disconnections my car radio software crashed and the radio restarted itself. When I connected my iPhone again it still kept disconnecting. I restarted my iPhone. Now that car radio restarted itself and my iPhone had been restarted it worked fine with no more disconnects.


So either my at radio software/ hardware is buggy (probably part of the issue) or/also the connection issues (maybe caused by low cell signal and slow internet at that time while I was listening to Apple Music service - as the post above stated causes problems) caused my phone to cause the car software/hardware to crash and subsequently keep disconnecting until my phone restarted.


Obviously the CarPlay hardware and software/firmware is buggy. Hopefully apple takes this to heart and greatly improves it with updates. .... and soon.

I have a 2016 Honda Civic as well (EX-L trim) and also have a large Apple Music library. Never thought to turn it off, nor would I want to but I'm gonna try it and if that's the culprit I will probably unsubscribe and use Spotify or Tidal. This would really suck as I enjoy iCloud Library and Apple Music and neither of the other services would enjoy Siri integration while driving but the disconnects are driving me nuts.

Mine was working great until recently. I just remembered I had changed a setting on the iPhone. When you go to Settings > General > CarPlay, the iPhone will ask if you want to connect to CarPlay with USB ONLY or USB and wifi. I had recently selected the later, thinking wifi would make a difference. The time seemed to coincide so I switched it to just strictly connect with USB and haven't had any issue since.

I was able to get CarPlay to connect consistently with my iPhone 6+ running 10.3.1 and my 2017 Honda CR-V Touring by deleting both profiles from the CarPlay section on iOS and then re-adding the phone via USB *only*. Here's what I did:


* in General --> Settings --> CarPlay, I deleted both profiles (there was one for wired USB and one for wireless

* in Honda --> Smartphone --> Apple (CarPlay), I deleted the entry for my phone

* turned car off completely and then started again

* wait for Honda system to turn on fully (i.e. wait until home screen appears)

* connect iPhone via Apple USB-Lightning cable

* in Honda --> Smartphone --> Apple (CarPlay), I re-added my phone

* in General --> Settings --> CarPlay, confirm only one profile with option 'Allow CarPlay while locked'


The key was to only have that one profile in iOS CarPlay with that option (which indicates it's the profile for wired USB.) If you see another profile with the option to use CarPlay when phone is near car, that's the option for wireless (I deleted this profile... not clear that my car supports wireless CarPlay.)


Another indicator: if phone is unlocked, the menubar will turn blue if using wired USB connection for CarPlay, purple if using wireless CarPlay (or what it thinks is wireless CarPlay.)

I have new Pioneer AVIC F70DB with Carplay and using iPhone 6 with IOS8.4

I also have been frustrated with the same constant disconnect problems and have unsuccessfully tried everything in efforts to resolve such as:

1. Changing USB cables

2. Restore iPhone 6 to "New Phone" & from Backup

3. Visited the Apple Store and had 2 "Genius" appointments. Outcomes were:

(a) updated firmware

(b) restored phone from cloud backup

(c) technician inspected my iPhone 6 particularly the lightening connection port and confirmed all appears OK.

(d) advised that IOS8.4.1 was released yesterday i.e. 14 August 2015 and to update to this version, which I did. However Carplay continues to disconnect.

Whilst the disconnects are frequently random and usually within 1min of attempting a connection, there are rare occassions where a connection is maintained.

However, I'm then able to trigger an immediate disconnect through activating Pioneer's inbuilt navigation system.


I believe I've now attempted all known troubleshooting options and am still no closer to even identifying the cause, let alone rectifying it. My next course of action will be to go back to my local Apple store and have my iPhone 6 thoroughly tested in the hope that the issue proves to be a fault in my iPhone 6 and that Apple will then hopefully replace the phone.

I had the same issues with my Pioneer SPH-DA120. I upgraded to iOS 9.1 and the issues still happened. I realized the issues started when I installed the MLB app. It is CarPlay compatible. I deleted the MLB app and I deleted Free Audio Books app (all the free books can be downloaded on Audible). Fingers crossed...but I have not had disconnect problems since MLB disappeared.


Just curious, what other CarPlay compatible apps are you running that are not standard?

I deleted the MLB app and I deleted Free Audio Books app (all the free books can be downloaded on Audible). Fingers crossed...but I have not had disconnect problems since MLB disappeared.

Hello!


Issue Resolved with CarPlay "Device Not Connected" / Disconnecting Issue.


I had the issue with Apple CarPlay disconnecting after roughly 2 mins after making connection with the lightning cable.


I tried with two lightning cables and two iPhones (happened with one phone and not the other.)


I found that the "Onavo" App that works as a VPN to save date is causing this disconnect with CarPlay.


Go into : Settings --> General --> VPN and if "Onavo" is there remove it!
