Q: How can I stop iTunes from hijacking transactions with other web sites?

The New York Times no longer does subscriptions through iTunes.

I tried to subscribe directly through the NYT website, and Apple, without

my knowledge, hijacked the transaction and charged me for the subscription.

Apple did not send this information or payment to NYT, and I had to subscribe

and pay by phone.  Apple needs to stop this kind of fraud, reimburse me, and

cancel the monthly payment iTunes has set up.

Apple are not here, these are user-to-user forums.

The NY Times For iPad app's description page says that you can still subscribe, and that it will automatically auto-renew unless you cancel it : NY Times For iPad :

Subscribe now and your first week is free.*

    Subscription Options:

    • Unlimited access to this app + NYTimes.com for $14.99 per month. Cancel anytime.

    • All Digital Access (including the NYTimes apps for iPhone and iPad + NYTimes.com) for $34.99 per month. Cancel anytime.

All Digital Access members may also share their subscription with a family member.

    • Times Premier (including All Digital Access) for $44.99 per month. Times Premier members also receive Times Insider blog access on the iOS apps, as well as web access to the Times Insider blog, Times Talks, TBooks, special Times crosswords and more.

Your subscription will automatically renew each month and your credit card will be charged through your iTunes account. You can turn off auto-renew at any time from your iTunes account settings.

Is that the app that you have, and have you turned off its auto-renewal on your iTunes account : View, change, or cancel your subscriptions - Apple Support ? If you have turned off but will still charged through your iTunes account then contact iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/

Thank you, that helped.  I was able to turn off the automatic renewal.  That still

does not solve the false charge.  Apple may say that it still handles NYT subscriptions,

but NYT disagrees -- and Apple never sent the subscription information to NYT.

If NY Times say that they no longer does subscriptions through iTunes then they need to update their app in the app store to remove subscriptions from it (and change the app's description page), their app still applies you to take out a subscription through your iTunes account.

If you want to stop your son buying things then use Settings > General > Restrictions on the device to turn off in-app purchases and to require your password to be entered

    for every download.

Purchases are considered final, but you can try the 'report a problem' page to contact iTunes Support and see if they will refund or credit you : http://reportaproblem.apple.com/

(As these are user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple, I've asked the hosts to remove your email address from your post - it's not a good idea to post personal info on any public forum.)

To remove your credit card from your account : Change or remove your Apple ID payment information in the iTunes Store - Apple Support

To stop in-app purchases being done on an iOS device : Settings > General > Restrictions > In-App Purchases 'off

And require your password to be entered for purchases : Settings > General > Restrictions > Password Settings (or Require Password if it's on an older iOS version)

To contact iTunes Support to see if they will refund you : http://reportaproblem.apple.com/

You are right, the app needs updating to reflect that NYT does not handle subscriptions through iTunes.  Apple also needs

to change - it took my money without me knowing that iTunes was involved, and it never started a subscription for me. It looked

like I was working on the NYT website; there was no mention of iTunes.

I asked for a refund by reporting a problem, and the Apple support person who replied said that since I wanted to "cancel my subscription,"

she would "refund" me by giving store credit.  There was no subscription through Apple to cancel, and Apple is

keeping my money. I do not want store credit. I will contact my credit card company about the transaction.

I have a NYT subscription and a NYT credit card charge, the subscription I started more than a week after iTunes charged

    me without starting a subscription.

After you showed me how to manage subscriptions through Settings, I showed my husband how to do it on his iPad.  He

reactivated his lapsed subscription to The Economist.  iTunes charged him $129.  But guess what! The subscription did not

activate.  The Economist will not give him access, and keeps asking him to subscribe.  Is this part of a larger iTunes

scam with subscriptions, taking money when it no longer has a financial relationship with the publications?

This screen shot you sent with your first answer is not what I saw when I subscribed from the NYT Website.

The unlimited access to NYT was $19.99 per month (not $14.99).  Indeed, iTunes charged me $19.99.  So Apple's

app, which I did not use to subscribe, also has wrong information about charges.

What I pasted is from the description page for the NY Times iPad app in the iTunes app store - it is not Apple's app, it was developed by NY Times, and they are responsible for its description and what does/doesn't allow.

Is this part of a larger iTunes scam with subscriptions, taking money when it no longer has a financial relationship with the publications?

The Economist, NY Times etc irresponsible for their own apps, if they are still allowing subscriptions to be made through iTunes and giving you anything for it then they need to fix them.
