MY iPhone 5s just went dead. iTunes said its in recovery mode. If I restore will I loose everything on my phone?

If it is in recovery mode you have already lost all content - recovery mode erases the device.
You will need to use the instructions for connecting to iTunes via the recovery mode found in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
Anything that was on the phone is already gone. You will need to restore from your last backup to get your data back.
IM trying on iTunes. My screen is still black nothing happening. iTunes says it's downloading software for the phone.
If it is recognizing the iPhone, getting the info it needs, that is a good sign. Sometimes that takes a while...if you made a backup prior to all of this that can take a while, also, to restore.
