Text/ title is hidden behind image

Hi, sorry this is an amateur question but I am having trouble with the text in my video. I have a few frames of still images and when I have added text/ titles to them, the text is automatically placed behind the image, so that it is not visible. Could someone please tell me how to make the text appear in the foreground and the image in the background as it should be?

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), Final Cut Pro 10.0.9

Everyone here was new at one time, welcome.

A screenshot of your timeline would be helpful because you seem to be adding your text incorrectly to the project. If you simply double-click on one of the text elements, say, Basic Title, a copy of the text element will be placed into your project at the location of the playhead and on an upper video layer. For it to be placed below, or behind, you video track requires a lot of work.

Tell us how you are trying to apply your text effects.
