I found a video of a guy dancing on a solid purple background, and I tried the chroma key but that only seems to work on the guy's green shirt. I want to know if there's a way to remove only the purple behind him. I'm relatively new to FCPX so please answer thoroughly. Thanks in advance!

All keyers have a color sampler function to pull a key from whatever color you wish. Open all of the controls for the keyed and look carefully at the help section about the keyed effects.
Purple usually is quite difficult to key because the red and blue content appears in so many other pixels. You end up using two or three copies of the same clip with different masks and keys applied or you learn to use the advanced functions of the keying selectors and refiners.

Use chroma keys
A challenging part of creating a good chroma key is shooting the chroma key video, and in particular, using a good, well-lit background that provides a uniform color to remove. A wide variety of specialized chroma key background options are available, from chroma key paint that includes highly reflective additives to chroma key cloth or paper sheets. Additionally, it is important to use the best camera you can access and avoid using a highly compressed video format such as DV or MPEG-2.
For the following examples, this woman will be keyed over a street scene. The light stands will be handled in Finalize the key.
Do this on the Inspector for the Keyer effect:
- first drag the Strength slider all the way to zero.
- click the Refine Key: Sample Color button, and the drag over the purple area in the viewer to select the color you want to key.
Like David said, getting a good key may not be easy, depending on the shoot, especially if the background color is similar to something on the foreground, like the skin color of the subject.
