Q: Yosemite updates SLOWED my 2010 iMac

I am writing for any assistance I can get regarding the latency of my iMac. I get spinning beach balls on simple internet pages without flash, trying to bring up a Pages document locally, uploading to Photos, songs pausing while playing local music on iTunes. You name it, it's slow. I completed the Etresoft dx for computer. Here it is with the request of assistance please other than getting a bigger Time Machine HD... I see that one Any suggestions to bring back my iMac that was GREAT less than 2 months ago...

Your computer may be slow because of a bad drive.

    ST31000528AS disk0 : (1 TB)

            EFI (disk0s1) <not mounted> : 210 MB

            Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / : 999.35 GB (94.06 GB free) - 116 errors

Your hard disk is reporting close to 120 errors, this indicates it may be failing. Before you do ANYTHING backup the computer and test that it works!

Then run Apple's Hardware Test in extended mode 2-3 times back to back. The reason for  running multiple times is AHT does not always find errors after the first or second pass, however when it does they are correct.

You can also boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R) and using Disk Utility run Verify Disk 2-3 times and Repair Disk 2-3 times. If you get errors on the HD after the 3rd pass of Repair Disk, then you know the HD needs to be replaced.

Yosemite had nothing to do with this, it was a total coincidence but it does need to be addressed immediately.

First run the tests I proposed and see if the drive needs to be replaced. If it does, click https://locate.apple.com/country to locate and AASP in your area. It is best to not do this yourself, unless you know exactly what you are doing.

You can start by checking if these errors may be repairable using Disk Utility. Try this first:

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion

    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears.

    Repair

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the out-dented drive entry in the sidebar. Note in the status area near the bottom of the window if SMART is reported as "Verified." If not, then the drive is failing. If that is not the case, then select the indented entry, usually the Macintosh HD entry, from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

If you have no success with the above, then replace the hard drive. There are many reliable sources of drives, but be sure you get one that is the exact same model as you now have so it will work properly with the temperature sensor for the drive. Otherwise, you will need a special cable to by-pass this. Otherwise, your fans will run a full speed all the time - quite noisy.

    Disk Information: ℹ️

            Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / : 999.35 GB (94.06 GB free) - 116 errors

First thing to do is make sure you have a current backup of your hard drive because, as Kappy pointed out, you may have a failing drive.

Next boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the disk permissions and then the disk.  If any disk errors are reported and reported fixed repeat the repair until no errors are reported.  Reboot normally and run Etrecheck again to see how the drive is reported.

Next remove the   com.apple.MobileMeSyncClientAgent.plist file.  MobileMe has been defunct for several years now. You can search for it with Find Any File  which can search areas that Spotlight can't, like system folders.

Do you really need MacFUSE?  Unless you have some unusually formatted exterior HD you shouldn't need it.  Uninstall it.

    Startup Items: ℹ️

        comapcpcpestart: Path: /Library/StartupItems/comapcpcpestart

Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemit

These startup items are obsolete and can be removed.

If running Disk Utility doesn't clear up the disk errors make an appointment at your nearest Genius bar for a free diagnostic check.   In any case keep a current backup of the hard drive all times to prevent data loss if the drive does fail.  One method I use as do others is to have an external HD and clone your current boot drive to it and keep it updated frequently (I do once a week).  Then if the boot drive fails you can always book from the cloned drive temporarily and to see if you can repair the boot drive.  If you are then required to replace the boot drive in the iMac you can clone the external HD to the new internal drive.

Also reboot frequently to clear out cache and temporary files.

So, I finally had a chance to complete the suggestions everyone gave me.

I fixed a ton of disk permissions

-Still can't fix the "system/library/coreservices/remotemanagement/ARDAgent.app..." "will not be repaired"

    Ran Disk Repair 2x

    -"Appears to be ok"

    -"SMART" verified

So went to try to delete the startup items. Can't locate going into the hidden library/prefs.

Safari bounced 21x before launching, Pages 8x

So I was concerned when the errors increased from last time.

I went through and did the permission repair again.

    -Same coreservices/remotemanagement couldn't be repaired

-private/var/db/displaypolicyd showed up but was fixed (that's it!)

-Did disk repair again, "appears to be okay"

Your hard drive is failing!  Make sure you have a current backup and get a replacement drive.

If you have an external HD that you can clone your boot drive to it will make it easier to get your system and files onto a new internal drive by booting into the external HD and cloning it back to the new internal drive.

For what it's worth I like the hardware offered buy otherworldcomputing.com.  Great customer support and warranties.

You have been advised by at least 2 of us that your HD is in trouble and before you do anything that has to be addressed. Backup immediately and make plans to have the HD replaced by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

I understand your concern regarding advice being given. I have a Time Machine hard drive that backs the files up on a continuous basis. I am in the process of determining whether to go down the path of purchasing a new iMac or investing in the clone back up and the internal replacement. This is more of a financial pause than anything else. I have installed RAM, Aircards, etc. in my various Macs and am quite able with the machine and tech items. Ultimately, my concern was the the errors decreased dramatically to 34 from over 100 in hopes that it wasn't failing. I appreciate the assistance I have received, but am looking more for the long term solution advice.

Thanks for your reply, if you are not aware Apple sells refurbs that are identical to a new machine, have same warranty as new and are also eligible for AppleCare and save hundreds of dollars. In short, they may be worth considering. Whatever you decide, please let us know.

I have purchased a WD My Book Hard Drive for Mac 4 TB as a temporary boot drive as suggested. It should arrive in a couple days from Amazon. With my computer being 5 years old and having two daughters in the school age (K and 3rd), I am considering getting a new iMac for Mommy & Daddy, reformatting this one for kiddos after getting a new drive. At least the new external is a bonus for any computer once we resolve the internal drive issue with this one. I have lots of photos, enjoy photo editing and want to get back into video editing, so a new system with updated everything may be best. I'll keep you guys update. Thanks!

When you get the drive be sure to format it according to this Apple document:  OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support.
