Q: Macbook Pro Stuck on Grey Screen

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro, the other day it froze on us. We restarted it by holding down the power button and when it just had a circle with a line through it. I tried restarting it a few times and getting into the recovery by holding down ⌘ + R and it would not book into it. After a few times of trying it then started having a flashing folder sign with a ? in it. It still would not boot into recovery or safe mode. A few times it would actually boot up, we would log into the account, but it would not do anything. It was like it was out of resources and froze. Mouse would move but no programs would open.

I put it aside for a few days, come back today to dig in and now it is stuck on a grey screen before the apple logo and will not do anything. Tried booting every way possible, clearing everything possible and NADA! I am a realist and realize that it is not a quick fix and I may need to get my hands dirty, but I at least hope that it is fixable and the computer is not fried!

I have read all the forums and help and nothing I could find would work. I only post this cause I hope I can get some assistance beyond. If I need to get a new hard drive, replace the cable someone at work told me goes bad or what not. I will list what I have done and none of it worked.

  • Reset the NVRAM and PRAM
  • Single User Mode using ⌘ + S
  • Safe Boot
  • Run Disk Utility using ⌘ + R

Thanks again for your help!
