Songs keep repeating when I shuffle a playlist

On every iPod and iPhone I've ever owned:

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. The device remembers what I've already played so I don't hear the same song twice until I get through all, say, 250 songs on the playlist (unless I select a different playlist, manually select a song on the playlist, or close the iTunes app on my phone). As an illustration, using my iPhone 6 (still on iOS 8.3) last month I spent a week of commuting time, about 45 minutes a day, listening through a playlist and never heard the same song twice.

On my iPhone 6 since updating to iOS 8.4 (12H143):

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. It doesn't seem to remember what it's already played, so I end up hearing the same set of about 25-30 songs (with occasional randoms thrown in) every time I pause, put it away, and press play a few hours or days later.

Why doesn't Music seem to remember what it's already played? Is there any way of fixing this, or working around the issue so I don't have to keep hearing the same songs on a playlist?

On a possibly related note, I just connected my phone to my computer, and noticed that several of the songs that keep getting repeated show up in iTunes as having never been played. Has Music/iTunes stopped counting, or is this feature just not working any longer?

I think I've figured out an alternate option. I have over 2,500 songs on my phone and seeing the same ones in the queue after I've purposely skipped them is maddening! After reading several of these comments I went into the Songs folder. In the top right-hand corner there's a red "Sort" option. I noticed that mine was sorting songs by Artist rather than Song Title. I switched it and now I'm seeing new songs! Literally just did it though so only time will tell if that's the issue we've all been encountering.

Why is everyone marking MarjorlP4 answer as helpful. It did not answer the question asked and there is as of yet still no solution posted for this annoying problem. I actually have about 12 gigs of songs on my Ipod Touch and i go to all songs and hit play and then shuffle it.. so theoretically it could play over 115 hours without repeating a song. But no it repeats many of the same songs and never plays others. I walk 1.4 hours a day while listining and I don't want to pick out songs individually but this is annoying that Ipod and Iphone 6 do this. I am plenty computer and pc and ios savvy and I've seen no practical solution other that creating a huge playlist with a specific order and playing it without shuffle. That's just a pain in the..too much time.

I have this problem as well with the Ipod touch and the 15 gigs of music on there. I go to all songs play a song then shuffle and it will play from my all songs randomly but for some reason it repeats many of the same songs and does not play others. While I see no easy solution there is one way but it is actually a time consuming pain and probably not worth the trouble. But.. solution: You create a large playlist from your songs that you have copied and manually renamed in an numeric or alphabetical order in the tags so that let say you have 100 songs with named 001somthing through 100something. Then create playlist and play without shuffle.

Or (without doing the above suggestion)

you could just go to all songs hit play on the first one turn off shuffle and just listen to all songs in alphabetical/track order.

i just got this apple 6 plus and recently went through the update to 10. Switched from a note(feeling like a mistake) oh switch they said, you'll love apple blah blah. Yeah not so much, although there are a few features I like. Not really a whole lot here that's all that great. so i have Apple Music and use it regularly at work 10 plus a day normally. i don't use a playlist like others are saying, I simple go into songs click on A song out of 400+ songs then click shuffle. It will run through the same series of songs regardless of what song you click on. Drives me insane, if there isn't any way to change this I'll cancle and move back to amazon music cause I heard they changed a lot and it's. a lot better now. I've done everything I can think of to fix it, but there arent to many settings to go through to change it haha seems like its gonna have to come in an update to fix it.

That's crazy. I called apple ystrdy and was told to upgrade to ios 10 but guess what, the ipod touch 5 will not be getting this upgrade. Why the rep didn't know this vital piece of info is beyond me so I may do what jhkim01 did and download cesium music app. So far it sounds as though ios 10 the repeating shuffle is still an issue. The rep did say to put in a ticket to their tech support. Ha! Well idk if it's worth it. Maybe those of you who have ios 10 this may work but I have to throw in the towel. I'm not buying the touch 6. I want to thank all of you in this forum for sharing my pain n sniff sniff and I hope you guys can find a solution, fingers crossed.

Hi hnnr03 how are you? (salutations first). I just recently downloaded Cesium and I don't see the songs remaining/counter. So far I like the app the only problem I'm having is picking up from where I left off in the shuffle the next day. I have to shuffle all over again. I miss picking up from where I left off. Am I missing something? Is there anything you can suggest? I'd appreciate it.

I have had this problem start for me a few weeks ago on my iPhone 5. Both problems as in the same 20 odd songs looping instead of the entire playlist and also random double ups. I thought it was the phone and as I was planning on upgrading I didn't bother to look for a fix. Well I got my 7 plus o tuesday and had my first playlist shuffle tonight and omg it's still doing it!!! What the **** not only was it looping a fraction of my top 500 playlist it also played the same song within 3 songs. Very frustrated to see years of posts with this issue and no resolve. Very sad face. Will have to have a decent look on iTunes and the phone on my days off. Also I noticed going through the up next list there was a gap in the list and when it hit that gap was when it looped back to the start. Not sure if that helps or has already been pointed out.

I have iOS 10 with the same shuffle problem as others are reporting, although mine has the additional problem tacked on: shuffle doesn't work at.all. (And no, I don't have repeat turned on or Repeat1).

Working with IT frequently in my job, I will submit a trouble ticket in the hopes that Apple responds appropriately. I suggest everyone in this thread do the same and encourage their friends to do the same.

I have submitted trouble tickets with Apple. Spoke with 2 technicians there since last spring. They believed that I had a corrupted Music App, and that even restoring to backup would just push the corrupted App back to my phone. So they had me completely wipe my phone back to new. I did that twice, and still have the problem. And I have to say - it is a real pain in the *** to go through that process (because they don't want you to restore from backup - so it is like starting over).

After a couple phone calls that lead nowhere - Apple support pretty much gave up. They stopped communicating with me.

Just throwing in my two cents here. I've been noticing this problem for more than a year now. I'm always shuffling many songs and rarely listen to albums in order. I especially love shuffling all songs from an artist right before I see them in concert, and it's highly frustrating to have the same two or three songs repeating at different times. What's interesting is that Apple would display how many songs there are and what place you are in with that playlist, like 45/67 songs. This doesn't show anymore. It's crazy how a company that at one time focused all of their energy on music devices, that they can't even get it right with the iPhone. Pitiful is the only word I have for this. Apple, please fix one of the most basic functions. There's no excuse, just get it done.

I've completely given up on using the Shuffle feature.

Not only does it start a new shuffle sequence every time I skip a song, it also tends to repeat the same songs in the playlist/album before it's played all available songs first.

On top of that, and I don't know if it's a memory limitation. If I stop playing music for a few hours and use my phone throughout the day, when I return to Apple Music, it'll never remember what playlist/album I was listening to. It always starts from scratch.

I gave up on the shuffle feature too. Started listening to albums in their entirety because shuffle was driving me crazy.

And guess what happens today? I am listening to a 19 song album, and around song #9, all of a sudden it is shuffling and I am hearing songs from #1 to #8. I skip forward, and again - songs that I've already heard. I open the app - and shuffle is not even on.

SNAFU.

The number of upcoming songs is listed in the Cesium screen that is beyond the main player screen. Just tap the icon below the play button to see the upcoming songs list as well as the previously played list. The songs should take up where you left off, though occasionally Cesium loses track lately. Generally not more frequently then once every couple of weeks. Still no repeats though.
