Overlaying black card with transparent image or text?

Hi,

I am trying to overlay a black title card with cut out / transparent image and text. I have seen this done before and an example is on the title card at the very beginning of the video here.

Is there a way I can do this in iMovie? Basically just making the shape of the text / image transparent so that the video behind the black title card can show through.

Thanks!

You should be able to do it using the green screen utility. Your video would be in the timeline and a still overlay clip would be placed above it that you would have to create outside of iMovie. This still would be all black with your desired title text in green and saved as a .jpg or .png. When you place this above the video clip and select green screen from "Video overlay settings" the green title text will become transparent and show the underlying video while the rest would be black.

You could alternatively create the overlay clip in a separate iMovie project by placing a title on top of a black background and choosing green for the title colour. Share this then reimport into iMovie as the overlay clip. This method would also allow you to use one of the animated titles.

Details of how to use green screen are at: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0.8/#/mov82da1338a

I haven't time to try this myself but it should work.
