Daisy chaining peripherals

I have a MacBook Air runing OS 10.8.5. I am connected to 2 thunderbolt monitors and an external hard drive on the end. I have a free thunderbolt port on the external hard drive and am trying to connect an HDMI cable (using a mini-display to HDMI connector) to an HDMI capable TV. The TV initially tries to retrieve data when I try to display it, but then says it has No signal. When I pull the mini-display to HDMI cable directly into my MacBook Air it works fine. How can I make this daisy chain work?

Thanks

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Read through:OS X Yosemite: If a Thunderbolt device isn’t working and the link at the bottom of that article About Thunderbolt to be sure you are following the powering instructions.
