PeripheralsHello ChristineMichele,
Is this a new machine with a new mouse. Is it properly set up per Apple guide notes? Just in case, this is a general guide.

PeripheralsNo, but you may have accidentally disturbed a setting. Have you studied item 3 in the list of the link I gave you. Do you live near an Aple store or an Authorised Re-seller?

PeripheralsThen I think you should take both items into your local store having first made a genius bar appointment. They should sort it out on the spot ... no charge. I would be more reluctant to take this route with a Mac, being a much bigger item, but the MacBook air and a mouse are portable.
If this is your first Apple experience, don't be worried about troubling people with something that some people might have done by themselves; this is what a warranty is for.
