Every time I start my computer it asks for a start up disk

How can I keep my iMac from asking for a start up disk when restarting. I have the MacHD selected as start up disk in system preferences. It only started doing this when my time machine back up disk quit working.

iMac (21.5-inch Late 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
